JOB SUMMARY
The Mechanical Design Engineer must be based in LA and will be responsible for developing manufacturable 3D CAD models and necessary work products in partnership with design, manufacturing, quality and supply chain teams. This is a unique opportunity for a mechanical design engineer to create design templates, establish standard operating procedures for the design process and create innovative design solutions, with the overall goal of reducing cost of housing in California.

SoLa Impact is a real estate private equity firm with a double bottom line strategy focused on preserving, rehabbing, and building high-quality affordable housing in Black and brown communities. SoLa is Southern California's largest for-profit affordable housing developer and is currently in construction on over 2,000 affordable housing units across Southern California. SoLa currently owns and manages over $1.2 billion of multifamily assets, almost all of which are in low-income, Black and brown communities.
SoLa's new venture is reinventing multifamily housing creation by building the first and only standardized modular housing factory. The new venture is a comprehensive manufacturing system designed, engineered, and built to consistently produce a high-quality, low-cost, net-zero ready, and most importantly, standardized, modular housing product. This a Black-owned and operated business based in Southern California that will deliver between 1,000 – 1,500 modular housing units per year by 2025. Requirements
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Design and support products from concept to production, working with stakeholders from manufacturing, systems, supply chain and production. You will provide input in the module assembly process and take a lead role in design and production readiness of the product.
Develop state-of-the-art, manufacturable assemblies and sub assemblies for the product
Provide design direction, review and approve models and production drawings from 3rd party product design consultants.
Question requirements, delete parts and processes, simplify/optimize, accelerate, and improve component delivery methods
Partner with manufacturing, production, and supply chain to achieve highest component build rate, striving for high factory yield and production volume/cost
Work with clients, construction design teams and project managers to assemble and organize all information necessary to develop a manufacturable product model
Generate and maintain 3D CAD models, accurate BOMs (Bill of Materials) detailed drawings, component specifications, analysis and risk assessments and manage the product data in a PDM system.
Spearhead root cause investigations that arise in development, production, test, integration and launch, implement corrective actions to prevent repeat failures
Set the standard for rigorous component design and qualification testing
Find creative solutions to manufacturing issues and propose ideas to improve assembly process
Work with manufacturing and production to design and build jigs and fixtures to improve manufacturing accuracy and speed.
EDUCATION, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline required
Proficiency using 3D mechanical design and analysis tools (Autodesk Inventor, CATIA, Solidworks, ANSYS, etc.)
3+ years of experience in mechanical design
Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a fast-paced and challenging environment
Proficiency in Autodesk Revit preferred
