Director of Operations, Production

Company: Skylight
Job type: Full-time

Skylight is a technology startup based out of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Our mission is to connect loved ones by creating the world’s simplest products and services that improve family life. We make consumer products, like Skylight Frame and Skylight Calendar, that are loved by millions of people across the globe. Our founders are former venture capitalists and serial entrepreneurs, who have scaled this business to $100M+ in annual revenue while being completely bootstrapped. We think often about the thousands of smiles we are able to put on our customers’ faces each day, and it fills our hearts with purpose. That’s why we have been working hard to expand our team and invent, so that we can continue to bring the magic of Skylight to millions of loved ones throughout the world.
At Skylight, we have three core principles that guide our work and help us manage the business day to day: autonomy, rigor, and care. These principles show up early and often and help guide the work we do and the way we work.
We are hiring a Director of Production to be the entrepreneurial leader on our Operations team. This player-coach will be responsible for delivering all products to our warehouses globally. This includes inventory planning, manufacturing ops, quality, and inbound logistics.
You must have managed high-performing teams and have experience scaling a business. Consulting or financial services experience is preferred and manufacturing experience is a must. This role reports to the VP of Operations.
Responsibilities:
Strategy and planning: Partner with marketing and finance to develop production plans to keep all our products in stock throughout the world, while minimizing excess inventory, staying within the constraints of our working capital, and maintaining unit economics targets
Production: Oversee our international supply chain, production, and quality control to meet our customers’ high standards. Serve as the primary Skylight manager for all contract manufacturers
Inbound logistics: create transportation plans that result in on time arrivals while attaining shipment mode targets
Vendor management: own relationships with all freight forwarders
New product introduction: develop operational plans for all launches, working closely with Hardware, Product, our contract manufacturers and other cross functional teams
Reporting: Keep us organized with clear supply chain and inventory tracking throughout the product life cycle; identify gaps in our data capture and implement new processes/systems where needed
Systems architecture: Identify and implement tools and process improvements that will help us efficiently scale to more countries and sales channels
Uplevel our operations with data-driven recommendations and improvements
Lead, manage, and mentor the Production ops team
Who you are:
You’re complicated, fun, and love the “messiness” of getting things done!
You’re scrappy and entrepreneurial, yet have organizational acumen–you can build a band-aids and bubblegum structure to launch products in new markets but you can also optimize our core business to reduce costs and labor
Quick to act: you’d rather try and fail than do nothing at all
Sense of humor and intellectual honesty: you’ve made mistakes, learned from them, and laughed at how silly that error was in hindsight, which means you won’t make them again
Structured yet nimble thinker with strong analytical skills and an ability to think strategically and act tactically
Requirements
8+ years of progressive responsibility in operations, consulting, or financial services
Experience working with a physical product sold globally, strong preference for experience manufacturing in East Asia and exporting to the US, Europe, or similar
Successfully managed teams and mission-critical vendors, including overseas vendors
Led projects from start to finish, often through uncertainty
Used quantitative analysis to understand and solve operational or financial problems
Worked in an agile startup environment
