British Sugar is a home-grown success story and one of the most efficient and competitive beet processers in the world. Around 3,500 farmers based in East Anglia and the East Midlands supply our four advanced manufacturing sites with eight million tonnes of sugar beet every year. We, in turn, make this in to over 1 million tonnes of sugar, serving customers across the UK, Ireland and increasingly growing commercially in the EU and world sugar markets.

Salary Range £50,000 to £60,000

Job Purpose Lead and manage British Sugar’s strategic investment project in precision breeding for virus yellows resistance. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring scientific and legislative compliance alignment. Administer the major grant fund from Innovate UK and drive the development of valuable crop traits in sugar beet.

Core Accountabilities
Provide subject matter expertise on gene editing science.
Monitor relevant scientific literature to guide project decisions.
Interpret legislation/regulations to ensure compliance.
Communicate project progress, risks, and opportunities to stakeholders.
Manage Innovate UK funding claims.
Seek other funding opportunities within precision breeding.
Document project progress, results, and decision points.
Manage the project budget (approximately £1M).
Identify and pursue new opportunities to improve sugar beet crop yield, quality, and resilience. Skills, Knowledge & Competencies
Degree in a life sciences subject.
Working knowledge of plant sciences, gene editing techniques, RNAi, genetic transformation, plant pathogens, and trait development in crop plants.
Credible experience in successful technical project management.
Familiarity with regulatory frameworks.
Outstanding communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.
Managing internal and external senior stakeholders including external contract research providers.
Research grant administration and budget management.
Experience with multi-party consortium projects.
Experience with research contracts, intellectual property, and confidentiality management.
Knowledge of sugar beet genetics.
