Hello,
My client in Maidenhead is currently in need of a Mechanical Design Engineer due to expansion.
My client is a leading innovator in the development of cutting-edge UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) technology. They specialize in a range of projects, from R&D prototyping to scale manufacturing, aimed at revolutionizing the UAV industry. Their collaborative environment brings together experts from various engineering disciplines, including thermal, electromagnetic, power electronics, and mechanical design, to create state-of-the-art UAVs.
Job Description:
They are looking for a mechanical design engineer who will help them develop their electric vehicle fly-trains. You will work alongside their electro-magnetic specialists to develop structural housings for their in-house motor and high-speed generator designs.
Ideal experience includes some of the following: designing for high tolerance manufacture, stress analysis of static or rotating components, high and low speed bearings, bus bar design and manufacture, engineering drawings, working with suppliers for efficient manufacture and quotations, injection moulding and familiarity with composite materials (CFRP, GFRP).
Candidates with any of the above are encouraged to apply; previous experience with rotating machines is not mandatory but is certainly welcomed.
Experience in thermal, CFD and/or structural FEA modelling is also beneficial.
Your work will encompass a wide range of projects, from conceptualization to production, in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. You will collaborate closely with engineers from diverse backgrounds to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance of our UAVs.
Responsibilities:
* Rotating Machine Design: Apply your expertise in mechanical design and rotating machines to create innovative solutions for electric motors, generators, gas turbines, and high-speed rotors (40,000 to 70,000 rpm).
* UAV Integration: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the successful integration of mechanical components into UAV systems, considering factors such as thermal management, electromagnetic compatibility, structural integrity, and power electronics.
* Prototyping: Participate in the development and testing of prototypes, focusing on achieving high levels of reliability, efficiency, and performance in rotating machine applications.
* Design Optimization: Continuously seek opportunities to improve designs, reduce weight, enhance efficiency, and increase durability while adhering to project goals and timelines.
* Data Sharing and Documentation: Maintain clear and organized documentation of designs, test results, and technical specifications. Communicate effectively with team members and cross-functional teams, ensuring data sharing and collaboration.
* Quality Assurance: Collaborate with quality control teams to ensure that manufactured components meet the highest quality and safety standards.
* Innovation: Stay updated with the latest advancements in rotating machine technology and apply this knowledge to drive innovation within the organization.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
* Proven experience in mechanical design and engineering, ideally with a focus on rotating machines.
* Familiarity with UAV technology and aerospace design principles.
* Proficiency in CAD software for 3D modelling and analysis, ideally SolidWorks.
* Strong problem-solving skills and a track record of successful project execution.
* Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, with the capacity to collaborate with professionals from diverse engineering disciplines.
* Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality designs on time and within budget.
Nice to Have:
* Prior experience mechanically designing rotating machines: motors, compressors, generators, turbines etc.
* Previous involvement in UAV projects or aerospace applications.
* Simscale or other FEA / CFD Software
* Experience with design for manufacture methods for high volume and prototyping stages.
* Experience working with composite materials.
* Experience modelling thermodynamic systems.
* Knowledge of thermal management solutions for heating/cooling
* Top level harnessing sizing.
